Fiscal Intermediary Services
A fiscal intermediary is an accountant that provides accounting and payroll services to the developmentally disabled and/or mentally ill individuals that receive services through the self-determination program administrated by the community mental health organization in their area.
We started providing these services to a few individuals located in the Midland area. Soon the number of participants we were working with increased as we were asked to provide our services in other areas of the state. Eventually, we began consulting with community mental health organizations and other fiscal intermediaries around the state.
Typical services provided include payroll preparation, personnel management, financial reporting, budget management and development, purchase of service payments, tax preparation, credentialing and Medicaid billing. While these services to the developmentally disabled and/or mentally ill are on the surface similar to those provided to businesses, they differ significantly due to the nuances of the tax code and the Medicaid program requirements that apply to the program recipients.
We are proud of having developed the methodology to provide respite services through the self-determination program; we currently provide these services to thousands of families in Michigan. We believe that this has been a significant advancement in the application of the self-determination program.
